Bison People Land Spring 2026 Update

Uncategorized Mar 25, 2026

This year we had a record-breaking warm winter which included much of the West and Plains. This has been warmest meteorological winter on record, with 131 years of climate data.

The heat and lack of snow have worsened the region's drought. Drought conditions are forecast to worsen or develop for many areas in the West and south-central Plains. High temperatures are expected to accelerate snowmelt in areas that did receive winter moisture. Early snowmelt can reduce water availability during the summer months, increasing the risk of water shortages, prolonging and intensifying dry seasons and increasing wildfire danger

Wildfires have already started in the Black Hills Region. Over 9,000 acres in and around Custer State Park have burned over the past week, just 30 miles away from our herd's location. Fortunately, the fire was burning away from us and posed no danger.

We have begun to prepare for an intense fire season as the weather continues to warm. The herd is now guided to graze dry grass in a way that will diminish our fire potential and create fire breaks around our property. We are considering purchasing hay for the coming months as the worsening drought could lessen the available forage. We've also purchased fire suppression systems to manage any wildfires that may threaten our location. Making sure the bison have enough to eat and are safe from wildfires is our top priorities.
